2010 White Rock Home Tour
When: Saturday - Sunday, April 24-25, Noon to 5 p.m.
Ju-Nel Homes: Dallas Jewels of Mid-Century Modernism
Presented by White Rock Home Tour in partnership with Dallas Center for Architecture
Exhibition
When: April 23 to May 28, 2010, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Dallas Center for Architecture, 1909 Woodall Rodgers Fwy., Suite 100, Dallas, TX 75201
Cost: Free and open to the public
What: The exhibition will examine Ju-Nel Homes architecture in the context of other mid-century modern architecture in Dallas and elsewhere. The show will include original Ju-Nel Homes drawings and blueprints, photos of the architects and homes, period advertisements and artifacts drawn from the personal collections of the Ju-Nel architects’ family, employees and homeowners.

Cost: Donations requested, which benefit Hexter Elementary
What: Private viewing of exhibition and light refreshments provided by Darrie Hinson, Catering & Company will be 6-7 p.m. Moderated panel of Ju-Nel experts will discuss the period, the architecture and the personalities behind Ju-Nel Homes from 7-8 p.m. Panelists include Wilson’s daughters, wife Nelda (one of Ju-Nel’s namesakes) and office manager, in addition to Vel Hawes, FAIA and Texas AIA’s 2008 Lifetime Achievement award winner and thirty-seven-year resident of a Ju-Nel Home. The moderator is Donald Gatzke, AIA, Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington.

5th Annual Advocate Magazines White Rock Home Tour
Presented by Micky Carr and Janelle Alcantara, David Griffin and Company Realtors
When: April 24 - 25, noon to 5 p.m.
Where: White Rock Lake area. See www.whiterockhometour.org for confirmed locations.
Cost: $10 in advance at White Rock Coffee, GreenSpot and neighboring Tom Thumb locations. Or, $15 during the tour at any tour-home.
What: Tours with remarks by docents at five modern homes: four mid-century modern homes (including two Ju-Nel Homes) and one “green home” in honor of concurrent Earth Day. The green home is designed and built by Alan Hoffmann who was designated by the City of Dallas and D Home magazine as a green leader in this city. Two of Hoffmann’s homes were the first LEED-certified homes in Dallas. Visitors can meet-and-greet Hoffmann in the home he designed at designated times.

10029 Woodgrove Dr. – 2006 White Rock Home Tour
This home was built in 1965 on a sloped, irregular lot. Ju-Nel partnered with homeowner/architect BJ Swango to design the home around an old, spreading American Elm tree. The signature Ju-Nel low-pitched roof accommodates the elm’s low hanging branches. Custom features include brick flooring, a corner copper-topped fireplace and petrified wood bench in the living areas, exposed interior and exterior wood beams, and over-sized eaves. 10449 Vinemont St. -- 2007 White Rock Home Tour
This Japanese-inspired home was built in 1960 with a U-shaped floor plan around a central courtyard. Ju-Nel custom designed suji screens for interior and exterior areas, and the living room showcases a shoji screen sliding partition door. The home features Ju-Nel trademarks of exposed beams inside and out, floor-to-ceiling windows and doors, and over-sized eaves. Smooth South African wood was used for paneling and the kitchen cabinets. The home has approximately 2,424 square feet of living space.

10226 Vinemont St. -- 2007 White Rock Home Tour
Built in 1961 with approximately 1,858 square feet of living space, this compact home showcases several Ju-Nel trademarks. The low-pitched roof is complemented by long, slim, sliding windows above rough cedar panels inset into the exterior brick walls. Inside custom features include smooth South African wood paneling and a striking mosaic of midnight blue and gold tiles over the fireplace. The home showcases the characteristic exposed wood beams, large expanses of glass, and built-in cabinets and shelving.

9271 Meadowglen -- 2008 White Rock Home Tour
This home, built in 1959 with 1,797 square feet of living space, floats on steel I-beams that sit on exposed concrete piers. Courtyards, patios and balconies surround the house on the sloping, wooded lot. The exterior of the home combines brick, natural stone and cedar. The interior of the home features the Ju-Nel signatures of vaulted ceilings, exposed wood beams and large windows. The living room showcases a custom-designed cylindrical fireplace and intricate wood paneling.
